Competitive Characters
Ok, I've been playing Guild Wars for almost 2 months now, and I feel that I've learned the lingo pretty well, having raised a necro and a warrior both to level 20's, as well as fooled around and had great success with many different pvp builds. Now, that being said, I've been powned quite a few times (Sorry for those who don't like the word pown, but pretty much the only way to describe how bad I've been spanked), and I've seen players take a build to new heights I didn't know existed. For instance, in the beginning of the game, I thought that warriors could only tank. Quite the mistake, as I learned when a warrior/ele pretty much rocked me. I guess he DID tank, in the sense that he rolled right over me. But that's beside the point of this article, which is, which builds are REALLY competitive for Guild Battles and the Hall of Heroes?
I see alot of prejudice among classes, most of the time spawning from one class' absolute love of themselves. =) And that's cool, but I'm curious as to what builds really do excel in competive, non-random pvp. I hear often that rangers aren't as good in Guild Battles and HoH, yet my ranger pvp build went on an 18 win streak my first time playing him! Talk about your first impressions. I know, and am a firm believer, that EVERY build and class combination in Guild Wars excels at something and is worth its salt in any given situation, but truly, are there any builds that really shine in true competition? Sorry for the length of this question, but I think some of the experts could really enlighten me to this as well as many of my friends who are wondering about this. Thanks for all your replies. |

I always believe the best build is one few have tried. Whenever one build is favored, there bound to be lots of people looking for a build to counter it. So the so-called "favored build" is only temporarily favored. As a ranger who had often invested heavily on expertise and wilderness survival, I begin to look closely at beastmastery option. So in short, go for a build that you like to try and test it out in random arena or pve area, and try not to listen to those myths circulating around about "uber" builds.

Some builds are truely "uber" in that they acheive what they want to do with little recourse for the opponent. Read the forums and watch the skills used by top opponents when dead. Keep your ear to the ground and you will get some good ideas. The other option is learning the skills well enough to find counters and combos that will help in current game setting, which is quite the chore but well worth it.
